Back in 1987 when the Scorpio line of Merkurs was introduced, I had no idea what I was in for! I did know that I liked the Scorpio! I admired them enough to send in all those postcards that were inside of my favorite magazines. How ever , being way too young to own a $29,000 luxury car, I simply collected the brochures that were mailed to me. I still have all of them to this day, many of them are still unopened. In 1992 my wife (then fiancé) and I were looking for an upscale used German sedan. I remembered the Scorpio, despite being discontinued from Ford for three years now. We went to an auto dealer in Lancaster, PA who had all of the local off-lease cars from Ford. After looking at many, we decided on a 42,000 mile Diamond White Scorpio with an automatic transmission. I still wish I also bought that other car I liked, a Black on Black 5-speed car! In 1996 I became familiar with the strong online community of Merkur enthusiasts, thanks to IMON. It was then I realized how special the car was, still very low mileage and in great condition. My background restoring cars and attending an accredited automotive training facility had come in handy in preserving our Scorpio. I had always kept the car clean and well-cared for, but it was time to freshen up the car for shows. Since then, the car has been shown in many shows, winning many prestigious awards. The car is also one of three Merkurs displayed (by invitation only) at Fords Centennial Celebration in Detroit, Michigan and the only Scorpio to ever be invited to attend the Eyes On Design show, held in Gross Point, Michigan. It is this experience I have decided to share with others in helping to preserve this rare breed of automobiles.
